Vet Tech Week is from October 17th-October 23rd this year. We encourage you to learn all about it and show any vet techs that you know some much-deserved appreciation. Various departments in any animal hospital must work together to ensure that your canine companion or feline friend has the best care. Veterinary technicians, in particular, are essential to the daily functions of veterinary practices and have critical roles in ensuring animal health and welfare. For this reason, Vet Tech Week annually aims to recognize vet techs’ contributions to the field of veterinary medicine. Here is some more information about what vet techs do and how anyone can show them that they matter.
The Job of a Vet Tech
Veterinary technicians perform an array of duties to care for your pets. They not only welcome you and your pet to the hospital, but they also assist the doctors in appointments, obtain and run diagnostic tests, administer your pet’s medication to help them feel better, and so much more! Vet techs are skilled in:
- Radiology
- Nursing care
- Phlebotomy
- Anesthesia
- Dentistry
- Surgery
The job of a vet tech can be physically and emotionally demanding. However, the job is also rewarding. Vet techs love to learn new things every day about cats and dogs. In addition, when a vet tech knows they helped a cat or dog recover from an illness and gave them a new lease on life, it warms the heart. Having such cute patients doesn’t hurt, either!
What Does it Take to Become a Vet Tech?
To become a licensed or registered vet tech, you must complete a postsecondary program in veterinary technology. Technicians must then pass an exam called the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to become registered, licensed, or certified.
How to Honor Vet Tech Week
- Provide your favorite vet tech with a gift card to their favorite coffee place. Vet techs can work long hours and weekends. They will appreciate the pick me up!
- Thank a vet tech! Vet techs work hard and care about the work they do. A “thank-you” for a job well done goes a long way!
