July 31st is National Mutt Day! This nationally celebrated day is also known as Mixed Breed Awareness Day. It’s all about rescuing, embracing, and celebrating mixed breed dogs. Notably, this day focuses on the plight of mixed breeds in shelters. Mutts make up the majority of the population in shelters. However, ironically, purebreds are more likely to be adopted. Mutts deserve as much love as their pure breed counterparts, and by adopting them, you can help save a life. Today we will share some ways you can celebrate National Mutt Day and facts about mutts.
Facts About Mutts
- They have a lot of character. Mutts have the personalities of each breed in their mix, meaning that you can look forward to bringing home a pup with a unique persona. When you’re a pet parent who owns a mixed breed, you understand that there is never a dull moment and the entertainment (and adorableness) is plentiful.
- Mutts are less susceptible to certain health problems. There are always exceptions, but overall mixed breeds are less vulnerable to particular genetic diseases such as hip dysplasia, spinal conditions, skin issues, knee problems, heart disease, and specific cancers.
- Their appearances, like their personas, are unique. Because mutts have so much variation in their genetic code, you can appreciate owning a dog that doesn’t look like any other. It’s a pretty great feeling to walk down the street and have a fellow dog owner or lover compliment you on your magnificent mixed breed.
So, How Can You Celebrate National Mutt Day?
You can adopt a mixed breed pup! You could also celebrate this day with donations or taking the time to volunteer at a local shelter. BARCS has volunteer opportunities and many canine companions that you can adopt. If you own a mixed breed, you can also spend July 31st catering to your precious pup. Pamper them by grooming them in the best fashion, feed them their favorite treats, and of course, spend the day cuddling on the couch and playing with your canine companion. You can also take them on a walk to a place you’ve never been to before and create a new memory and adventure! Finally, you can celebrate your four-legged friend by taking a selfie with your adorable doggo, sharing it on social media, and using the hashtag #NationalMuttDay. Don’t forget to tag us!
